Prof. Dr. Hugo van Woerden (1926) is Professor Emeritus astrophysics at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen (the Netherlands). He studied astrophysics at the Leiden University between 1945 and 1957.

Research
In his scientific research he mainly worked on the properties of gasclouds in our and other galaxies.

What's more
After having finished his study in astrophysics he was invited by Prof. Blaauw in 1957 to come and work at the Kapteyn Astonomical Institute in Groningen (the Netherlands). There, he created an active group of radio astronomers, that still today plays an important role, at the national and international level.

Now
He is still very active, giving talks and writing articles about the history of astronomy.

This film
Is he one of the few who was present at the presentation by Henk van de Hulst at the Leiden Observatory on april 15, 1944. In 1952 he helped preparing the Kootwijk antenna to perform the first systematic survey of the Galaxy. He also participated in the crash action in april 1953 at the Leiden Observatory, helping to put together the first map of the Galaxy.
