Prof. Dr. Adriaan Blaauw (1914-2010) was Professor Emeritus astrophysics at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen (the Netherlands). He studied astrophysics at the University of Leiden between 1932 and 1938. He concluded a PhD in 1946 at the University of Groningen.

Research
His scientific work was mostly focused on the study of the properties of the Galaxy and in particular the youngest generations of stars in the Galaxy (the so-called OB associations) and the problem of the formation of stars.

What's more
He was professor of astrophysics at the Universities of Chicago, Groningen and Leiden. He was also Director of the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute in Groningen between 1957 and 1970. From 1970 until 1974 he was the first Dutch Director of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). In addition he has always actively participated in and contributed to international astronomy community committees. He always kept following the developments in astronomy with a lot of interest and had a great passion for the history of astronomy.

This film
He experienced from close all the developments and changes in our thinking about the Universe since the end of the 1920s. He was a close colleague of Profs. Jan Oort and Henk van de Hulst.
